There are a few special things to remember during Invisalign. As the aligners gradually straighten your teeth, you can help them along with a few daily habits. Whether you’re about to begin Invisalign treatment, are already on your way to straighter teeth, or are just considering alternative orthodontics, this checklist will help you achieve ideal results. Right-click to save it to your computer, and then read on for explanations of just why these steps are so important.

Making Your Invisalign Quick and Uncomplicated

  • Wear your aligners long enough each day – 20-22 hours might not seem like a tough number to hit, but when you add up the amount of time spent eating, drinking, and cleaning your teeth, you realize that it’s imperative to put your aligners back in ASAP. If you struggle to remember, set a phone alarm when you take your aligners out, so that you can be sure to stay on a timed schedule.
  • Remove aligners when drinking liquids other than water – Your aligners can trap sugars and acids against your teeth, so it’s best to take them out before drinking non-water beverages. This way, your saliva can do its job of cleansing your teeth post-drink, and you can clean the area before putting the aligners back in.
  • Brush and floss before replacing aligners – As we mentioned above, aligners can trap food particles and plaque-forming bacteria. Get yourself a travel dental care kit like the one pictured above, so you’ll be able to brush and floss on the go. It’s quick to do, and once you get in the habit, you’ll find yourself enjoying having cleaner teeth and breath throughout the day.
  • Clean aligners properly – We want to do everything possible during Invisalign to prevent you from experiencing cavities or gingivitis. This means cleaning bacteria off the aligners on a regular basis. Let’s work together to make sure your straightened smile is disease-free!
  • Change aligners on schedule – Your Invisalign treatment plan is precisely calculated, and it depends on your regular changing of the aligners. Each time you get new aligners, mark the appropriate days on your calendar so that you can keep up with your straightening. Some patients hesitate to switch because they’re hoping to avoid the temporary soreness that comes with a new aligner – don’t fall into this trap. It will end up making your treatment take longer.
  • Keep your regular appointments – If you miss an appointment, it could take a little time to reschedule, and throw your straightening progress off. Be sure to schedule and maintain your checkups so that we can keep you moving forward.
  • Take steps to maintain your results – Dr. Okamura will help you get the tools, appliances, and resources you need to maintain your straighter smile. Be sure to follow her instructions so that your new smile sticks. It’s likely that you will need to wear retainers during the night in the months following the end of treatment. They will help your teeth and bones take to the new structure, and your smile to remain in place.

We are always available to be your allies in working toward improved oral health and a beautiful smile. Don’t hesitate to call us at (206) 362-3200 whenever you have something on your mind!
